Community Card Style Poker Games

Poker games have become extremely popular in the past 15 years or so. While the game of poker had always been a popular choice for people to play in casinos or with friends, the onset of new technology that lead to poker becoming an easily accessible online gambling phenomenon as well as a popular spectator sport with big name, big money star players, brought on a whole new era for the classic card game.

Texas Hold'em

What makes poker so appealing is its unique gambling system, and the fact that rather than just being about the luck of the cards you are dealt, it is also about skill, strategy, and your ability to make your rival players believe you have a strong hand, even if you don’t. This makes poker far more exciting and edgy than other card games, and a lot of fun to watch and play.

If you have been looking into starting to play poker, whether online or in a face to face environment, you may have noticed there are lots and lots of different styles, all with different rules. This can seem a bit baffling at first, but luckily most forms of poker fall into one of three major styles – draw poker, stud poker and community card poker. One of the most popular styles the world over is Texas Hold ‘Em, which is a type of community card poker. This can be a great style to learn if you are a beginner because it is easy to pick up on the rules, easy to find games, but endlessly challenging as you hone your skills to play for money.

What defines a community card style poker game is that you are only dealt a certain number of cards of your own to make up your hand (for example in Texas Hold ‘Em you are dealt two cards), and the rest of your hand is made up of cards everyone else also has access to. There are several rounds of betting as players decide whether they want to stay in the round or not based on the cards that come out and their ideas about what other players might be doing.

Community card style poker games like Texas Hold ‘Em and Omaha Hold ‘Em are, on the face of it, less complicated to learn that some other styles, but the real challenge comes from trying to work out what your fellow players are able to do with those community cards based on the way they bet and behave!
